Matthew an experienced caddie at 15

Max and Matthew have been a dynamic duo since 2014

Matthew Van Eden has caddied at the last five Isuzu Queensland Opens, including the last four as custodian of the clubs for South Australian professional Max McCardle.

Young Matt was 11 when he first teamed up with McCardle at the 2014 Open at Brookwater where the youngster is a junior member.

At the time he was off an 18 handicap… now the 15-year old is playing off a very respectable handicap of five.

“The first year in 2013 I caddied for Clint Rice, but he was with his mate, Max, the next year and we started off together,’’ said Matthew.

“Max was billeted to stay with my family one year at Brookwater and we got to know each other.

“I really enjoy doing it and it is great to be out with all the good players.’’

McCardle started today’s third round of the Open at The Brisbane Golf Club three strokes behind leader Michael Sim.

“Hopefully we can have a good day and Max is right in contention on Sunday,’’ said Matt as he wheeled McCardle’s clubs to the first tee.

Matthew is a Year 9 student at Ipswich Grammar School and aims to play top-line amateur golf and, perhaps, make a career of the sport.
